TEACHING & SPEAKING
Passing along what the set taught me.
Much of what happens on a film set has never been written down. It gets passed along between takes, from one generation of crew to the next. I learned that way for more than four decades, as a boom operator on more than 90 films. Now I bring it into classrooms, workshops, festivals and conferences around the world.
WHAT I TEACH
I teach production sound and boom operating, and the parts of the job no manual covers: how departments communicate, how to read a set, and the human dynamics that can make or break a production.
My workshops are built for film students, emerging professionals, experienced crew, and the educators who train them. Anyone who wants to understand how the sound department really works will leave with something useful.
Through my workshops, students learn to:
Treat every craft on set as an art form
Understand how the departments work together
Navigate on-set demands and personalities
Solve problems and learn on their feet
The goal is simple: the confidence and practical know-how to walk onto a real set and do good work.
WHAT I SPEAK ABOUT
Some of the best conversations happen outside the classroom. I speak at festivals, conferences, panels, and industry events about:
A career in production sound, from earlier Hollywood to today.
Women in the film industry, then and now.
The people behind the movies, and the stories that never reach the screen.
Why sound matters, and what directors and producers should know about the sound department.
Lessons from decades on set: collaboration, pressure, and the occasional complete disaster.
I've been honored to teach and speak at film schools, universities, and festivals across North America, Europe, and Asia, including:
MIMEC Mexico
BRING THE SET TO YOUR CLASSROOM
If you're planning a course, workshop, festival, or conference and think I might be a good fit, I'd love to hear about it. Tell me a little about your students or audience, the dates you have in mind, and what you'd like them to leave with.
