BEYOND TECHNIQUE

When I teach, students ask me again and again how to boom. The question tells me they think it's a matter of having the right tool and knowing how to hold it. I can't think of a single time in my life when learning how to hold something taught me how to use it.

Booming is a performance. Every boom operator is a performance artist, working in real time alongside actors, camera, and lighting to capture a moment that will never happen the same way twice. Beneath the Boom Pole covers the physical, mental, technical, and social skills that performance demands. Like Behind the Sound Cart, it's less a book than a film course.

Production sound is rarely taught in depth, and most of what boom operators know has been learned on set.

Today's productions bring new demands: evolving technology, more complex camera movement, and long, successive takes. Boom operators need proven strategies for doing excellent work while staying safe, and specific, detailed guidance on this craft is hard to find.

That's why I wrote this book.

The five components of boom operating

The last thing a boom operator does is pick up the pole. There’s a whole world of preparation, discussion, strategizing, collaboration, and negotiation first.

  • Mental: Critical thinking, imagining the movie, memorizing dialogue, story logic, and staying sharp through the final weeks of a shoot.

  • Social: Communication, leadership, camaraderie, and representing the sound department on set.

  • Political: Understanding power on a set, and why it can change day to day.

  • Technical: The physics of booming, the physical forces on the job, and things you can do to counter them.

  • Physical: Breathing, standing, movement, sleep, stress, and building a body that lasts a career.

WHAT’S INSIDE

From the first prep meeting to wrap, the book covers negotiating the deal, location scouts, camera tests, and building a sound team. On set, it covers working with lighting and camera, frame lines, multiple cameras, Steadicam, two-boom setups, shadows, reflections, and handing off. It covers safety in heat, cold, heights, stunts, and special effects, and treats a film set as the industrial worksite it is, including a set medic's perspective.

It also takes on the physical toll of the work, including neck and back strain and shoulder impingement syndrome, with guidance on prevention, physical therapy, acupuncture, and other treatment options.

It closes with maintaining a career, international work, and virtual production on volume stages.
